What Makes a Good Minecraft Username
On Minecraft: Java Edition the in-game name is your Java profile name, not your Xbox gamertag. Mojang support states Java profile names can be up to 16 characters, and you can only change your Java name once every 30 days. If you change your mind, you can go back to the old name after another 30 days.
Bedrock Edition works differently. There your in-game name is the gamertag on the Microsoft or Xbox account you play with, so you change it on Xbox.com or on the console, not inside Minecraft. On Nintendo Switch the name follows your Nintendo account nickname. The right name length therefore depends on where you play, and short names travel better between platforms.
